Mahesh Bhatt's Vishesh Films collaborated with newcomers 'Varun Mitra' and 'Rhea Chakraborthy' for an Interesting premise. Vishesh Films is famous for launching new comers and with an unusual title like 'Jalebi'. It was expected to do wonders. But Alas! The film tanked without a trace. Neither the film nor the leading actors could send any strong Impression on the audiences. People just didn't turn up to watch the film and instead went for 'Andhadun' and 'Badhaai Ho'.
While a failing of a film is no big deal, the disappointment comes for the aspiring actors who arrive in Mumbai coming from different background and try their luck in the showbiz zone. And when they get a chance to feature in a film production helmed by some of the most popular filmmakers of Bollywood, it's almost a dream come true. But in Bollywood, dreams do not come true by acting in films. Every film is your last film at the end of the day. If its a HIT you are often flooded with offers, If it flops, your journey to find another work begins again.
Which brings us back to Jalebi. The film has tanked and being forgotten but what does it mean for its leading stars Varun and Rhea? A Trade Analyst on the basis of anonymity tells us that a film depends on a lot of factors to work, and especially its far more challenging with two new leading actors. Not just the film itself, but the campaigning, marketing and promotions of the film should be in order so that the actors get enough coverage before the film releases. And if its a love story, the music also plays a very big factor. People were hardly aware of Jalebi's music.
When these things work wonderfully, you are all set for a good release. And then comes the content of the film, if the content is really engaging the film shall become a SMASH HIT and the newcomers are likely to be loved by the audience. He also gave examples of films like 'Qayamat se Qayamat Tak' 'Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai' and the recently released 'Dhadak' starring newcomers that offered great entertainment value. All these films were packaged so well and engaging enough to become HITS. Jalebi was a half baked attempt and the makers were just thinking of making some money out of its small budget if it works but we all know that doesn't work. Even if the content of the film were good, the promotions and marketing were so poor that half of the audiences were unaware of it.
Concluding the debate, we went back to our main question about the struggle of aspiring actors, the analyst then said that it's indeed not easy to get featured in a cinematic film for a newcomer these days, so even an offer like 'Jalebi' shall look enticing. But it's Important to wait for the right launchpad instead, because once your launch gets right, you will sustain anyhow. He cited the example of Sidharth Malhotra's success by saying Sidharth did the right thing by waiting for a right launch. Although the right age to debut in films is in early 20's and Sid made his debut at the age of 28 in Karan Johar's Student of The Year, the results were far better enough. There was no looking back for him and today he is one of bollywood's promising faces. Even though some of his past films have not worked, people still want to sign him as in demand. As a new comer, he has also struggled but patience and focus is the biggest vitality of the hour.
So does that mean films like 'Jalebi' cannot do wonders? The analyst said 'Of Course' they can but the content, promotion, marketing music, cast all matters. Vishesh films is the same production which gave a big hit like 'Fareb' with three newcomers 'Faraaz Khan' 'Suman Rangnathan and 'Milind Gunaji' all three later disappeared while the latter seen in few television serials and films. It's all depends on the prospects. But one should not give up. Hard work is the recipe one must keep trying, it's available free of costs.
